THE ADAPTIVE CITY: Innovating Inclusive Public Spaces for Urban Vitality Lessons from Sarajevo
by Mirela Idrizović and Emina ZejnilovićThis book is grounded in a people-centered methodological framework that conceptualizes public spaces as socio-spatial nodes instrumental to cultivating healthier, more resilient, and socially cohesive urban environments. Focusing on selected case study locations in Sarajevo, the research employs systematic observational methods to critically assess the functionality, inclusivity, and spatial performance of open public spaces. It investigates the degree to which these environments are accessible and welcoming to individuals across age and gender groups, and the extent to which they accommodate a multiplicity of social, recreational, and cultural practices. Moreover, the study addresses the temporal and climatic dimensions of public space use, evaluating their capacity to sustain engagement throughout different seasons and times of day. The overarching aim is to elucidate the social logic and experiential quality of urban open spaces, generating empirically grounded insights to inform strategic approaches toward more inclusive, engaging, and human-centered urban design.
