Measuring non-professionals’ comprehension of journalistic articles about human nutrition: Development of a four-tier test
ABSTRACT
Understanding the scientific concepts and principles underlying a topic is a major factor for facilitating informed decision making. However, many non-professionals need assistance in considering the highly complex interdependencies within these concepts and principles. Journalistic messages are, among others, a source of information on new scientific findings for adult non-professionals. Consequently, interventions aimed at increasing adult non-professionals' concep¬tual comprehension may involve journalistic messages. To be able to evaluate such interventions, a test is needed (1) that can easily be administered to many participants and (2) that allows a nuanced interpreta¬tion of the results. The individual steps necessary for the creation of such a diagnostic test are outlined using the example of human nutrition. Furthermore, the specifics when measuring comprehension of individual stimuli are outlined.
