ABSTRACT
The surge in Artificial Intelligence (AI) has prompted higher education institutions to reconsider academic integrity principles and formalise AI policy at universities. Many international universities have already adopted AI policies, promoting AI governance to ensure the responsible use of AI. The objective of this paper is to compare the current institutional policies on AI integration in the academic context across universities and investigate the fundamental components of the regulatory framework. The study applied qualitative comparative analysis to the AI policies of international universities across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Australia, and Oceania, using the following metrics: scope, ethical priorities, permitted and prohibited uses, and contributing factors. The findings of this study revealed that there is no universal AI policy. AI policies vary significantly across regions, reflecting differences in AI governance. AI regulation is explicitly categorised and controlled in Europe, North America, and the Australia/Oceania region, whereas minimal restrictions are imposed at universities in the Middle East. The outcomes of this study significantly contribute to a broader discussion on AI governance in higher education institutions and its successful implementation in educational practices.
